Unemployment continues decline in April

The unemployment rate declined again in April, dropping to 3.1 per cent compared with 3.4 per cent in March.

A statement issued by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco) on Friday said the number of people looking for work in April declined by 16,796 and now stood at 181,041.

Unemployment levels among young people (aged 16-24) dropped 13.5 per cent to 16,722 from March to April. Youth unemployment has fallen by 32.4 per cent in comparison with April 2010.

Some 4,500 unemployed had been affected by changes in the law which tighten conditions for receiving uemployment benefits, Seco said.

Seco said there were 21,231 vacant positions advertised in April, 768 fewer than in March.
