Vavrinec gets tennis wild card for Sydney

The Swiss Federation Cup tennis player, Miroslava Vavrinec, has been selected to join the Swiss squad heading for the Sydney Olympics.

Vavrinec, from canton Thurgau, has received an invitation from the International Tennis Federation as a “wild card” competitor in next month’s games.

She still has to be formally selected by the Swiss Tennis Association before her ticket to Sydney is booked.

Vavrinec will become the fifth member of the Swiss squad, joining Switzerland’s leading player, Marc Rosset, Roger Federer, Patty Schnyder and Emmanuelle Gagliardi.

The world number one, Martina Hingis, announced last month that she would not be going to Sydney because of the physical strain the journey might impose.

Her announcement was largely unnecessary because she had failed to go through the qualification procedure, but she could still have stood a chance by drawing the wild card.
