The Swiss international defender Ramon Vega scored two of six goals on his new Scottish club's Saturday battering of Aberdeen. Vega signed to Scotland's league leaders Celtic on Friday.

Vega transferred on loan to the Glasgow side from the English club Tottenham, who themselves bought the player from Italy’s Cagliari in 1997 for the equivalent of SFr9 million.

A Celtic spokesman said Vega had signed a contract for the rest of the season. The club’s manager, Martin O’Neill said that since the player’s contract with Tottenham had been due to run out this season he had been planning to snap him up in any case.

A successful medical allowed Vega to make his Celtic debut in fine style. After new teammate Henrik Larsson scored in the sixth minute, the Swiss made it two in the nineteenth.

Larsson struck again in the game’s seventy-sixths minute, and then scored his third goal two minutes later. Not to be outdone, Vega got his second in the eighty-first.

Celtic’s Jamie Smith scored his side’s other goal a minute from full time. Aberdeen failed to find the Celtic net at all.
