WEF opponents take to the streets

Relations between riot police and protesters in Davos were friendly Keystone

A few hundred protesters have demonstrated against the WEF meeting in both Davos and Basel.

About 100 people voiced their opposition near the summit’s venue, while up to 500 demonstrators took part in unauthorised marches in Basel.

In Basel, there were almost as many police officers as protesters.

Extra officers had been drafted in from other cantons, such as Aargau, Solothurn and Bern.

Water cannon on loan from canton Zurich stood at the ready and were used when a breakaway group of 50 demonstrators decided to stage a separate, impromptu march.

The protests in Davos were largely peaceful and took place outside the security zone around the congress venue.

Last week, some 400 people took part in an anti-WEF demonstration in Bern, which was broken up by police.
