Top Swiss athlete Anita Weyermann has announced her withdrawal from all competitions this season due to poor health.

However, the 24-year-old athlete from Bern said the decision did not mean the end of her career.

“I love my sport above all and always feel the same motivation to train,” said the bronze medal winner from the 1997 World Championships in Athens.

A season spoilt by physical problems would not stop her from “competing at the highest level” in the future, she added.

Weyermann is suffering from a viral infection in her digestive tract and will be unable to participate in the upcoming European Championships in Munich.

The infection is the result of overtraining and has left her immune system very weak, said Andreas Gösele, a doctor from the Swiss athletics federation. It is not known how long Weyermann will be out of action.
