Wicky is preparing to start his second spell in German football Keystone Archive

Swiss international footballer Raphaël Wicky has joined German top division side SV Hamburg until at least the end of the season.

This content was published on December 6, 2001 - 14:55

The move appears to be a good one for the 24-year-old defensive midfielder, following the failure of his previous club, Atletico Madrid, to win promotion to the Spanish Primera Liga.

Wicky's contract with Hamburg includes an option to extend his stay in north Germany for an additional three years.

The transfer marks a return to Germany for Wicky, who spent three and a half years playing for Werder Bremen before his move to Spain.
