Women curlers victorious

Switzerland's women curlers have won gold at the European Championships in Sweden.

The Swiss side proved too strong for the home team and defending champion, Sweden, winning 5-4.

Bronze in the event went to Denmark.

The Swiss team led by skip Mirjam Ott became the first since 1996 to win a gold medal in an important tournament, including the Olympics and World Championships.

And it was Ott who led the Swiss squad to European victory 12 years ago.

The Swedes beat Ott’s team with a perfect final stone at the Turin Olympics in 2006, but it was the Swiss this time who took gold with the last rock.

In the men’s event, Scotland triumphed over Norway 7-6 to defend their title. The German squad won bronze.
