Young Boys show soccer maturity in Turkey

Young Boys celebrate their victory on Wednesday night in Istanbul Keystone

Swiss football team Young Boys of Bern have reached the play-offs of the European Champions League after a memorable 1-0 win over Fenerbahçe of Istanbul.

After a 2-2 draw in Bern in the first leg, Young Boys were the clear underdogs. Fenerbahçe made it to the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2008 and had been expected to progress further in this season’s competition.

The Swiss were helped by the dismissal of Fenerbahçe’s Miroslav Stoch in the 53rd minute after receiving a second yellow card for diving.

Cameroon striker Henri Bienvenu took the lead for the Bern side five minutes before half time, scoring from an acute angle, and with the Turkish side down to ten men, Young Boys managed to hold out.

In another second leg qualifying match, FC Basel beat Debrecen of Hungary 3-0 at home and go through to the next round with an aggregate score of 5-1.
