Zurich voted top city in global survey

Zurich takes top spot in survey of world's best cities Keystone Archive

Zurich is the best city in the world to live in. In a survey comparing the quality of life in 215 cities across the globe, Zurich was rated joint first along with Vancouver in Canada.

In third place was Vienna in Austria. Geneva was not far behind, sharing joint fourth place with Copenhagen in Denmark and Sydney, Australia.

The Swiss capital, Bern, also scored high marks, making Switzerland the only country to have three cities in the world’s top 10 list.

Germany was also well represented, with both Frankfurt and Munich featuring in the top 10.

The survey, conducted annually by global consultancy firm, William M Mercer, evaluated the cities on 39 criteria, ranging from entertainment to the environment and the occurrence of natural disasters.

Other European cities fared less well in the survey, with Paris dropping nine places from last year’s 24 to 33, reflecting reported increases in crime and scoring poorly under “natural disasters” after a hurricane last year.

London came in at 40, New York at 44 and Moscow was way down the list in position 157.
