Switzerland's football champions, St Gallen, have lost their Ghanaian star, Charles Amoah, who signed a four and a half year contract with Austria's Sturm Graz on Tuesday.

The popular player – who scooped a Swiss award last year – was a vital part of the St Gallen team which took the 1999/2000 season title.

The striker scored 37 league goals in his 18 months with the club, plus five at the European competition level.

Despite Amoah’s talent, St Gallen reportedly found themselves unable to meet the player’s wage demands. Amoah’s contract with Sturm Graz is reportedly worth SFr 6 million.

Amoah, who moved to Switzerland in 1995, has worked his away across the football fields of several Swiss teams including Winterthur and Wil.

He was contracted to St Gallen until 2002 and the club will be demanding a transfer fee.

St Gallen also hope that the loss of Amoah will be compensated for by the arrival of Swiss under-21 international Alex Frei, who has been playing for Lucerne.
