Cabinet appoints top diplomats

The Swiss government has appointed Yves Rossier as the new secretary of state at the Swiss foreign ministry.

Rossier will succeed Peter Maurer who is to take up his new position as president of the Swiss-run International Committee of the Red Cross in the summer.

In his new role, 51-year-old Rossier will direct the activities of the Swiss diplomatic service in Bern and 150 embassies and missions around the world. Rossier had been head of the Federal Social Security Office since 2004.

The cabinet has also appointed Roberto Balzaretti as new ambassador and head of the Swiss Mission to the European Union in Brussels. Balzaretti is moving on from his current post as general secretary at the Swiss foreign ministry.  

On Tuesday the new EU ambassador to Switzerland, Briton Richard Jones, presented his credentials to Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf, who currently holds the rotating post of Swiss president.
