Swiss have to settle for lower ranks of Saturday’s World Cup events
Switzerland's skiers faced disappointment on Saturday, a day dominated by Austrian and French successes.
At the women’s World Cup Super-G in Cortina, Italy, the top-placed Swiss was Sylviane Berthod, placed 19th with a time of 1:28.37. The honours at the event went to France’s Régine Cavagnoud, with a time of 1:26.85, while Canada’s Melanie Turgeon was second.
Switzerland’s Catherine Borghi and Ruth Kündig were 43rd and 48th respectively, while Corinne Rey Bellet and Monika Dumermuth failed to finish the race.
In the men’s World Cup downhill at Kitzbühel, Austria, the home skiers dominated. Hermann Maier, racing in front of an excited crowd, grabbed the victory that hat long eluded him on this piste, with a 27 second lead over his compatriot Hannes Trinkl, standing at 1:56.84 to Trinkl’s 1:57.11.
With the Austrians snatching seven of the top 10 places, the best Swiss performance came from Silvano Beltrametti, placed 10th on 1:58.53. Dider Cuche managed 14th place, and Franco Cavegn 15th.
