Lausanne station re-opens after evacuation
Lausanne train station has re-opened after an evacuation over a suspicious package. The package was found to have contained only personal effects, according to police.
Train service has resumed after an earlier stoppage, said the Swiss Federal Railways.
After the package was identified around 14:30 on Sunday afternoon, Vaud cantonal police said law enforcement had closed the station and were investigating the situation. Explosives experts analysed the item but found it contained only personal items. Its owner has been identified, a police spokesperson said.
In all, the station was closed for about two hours during which time all rail traffic was interrupted. Those seeking to travel from Geneva towards Bern or Basel had to do so via Neuchatel and Biel.
Lausanne is Switzerland’s fourth-largest city and a thoroughfare on the train line between Geneva and the rest of the country.
