Basel rally for 1-1 draw in Barcelona

Basel scored with eight minutes to play on Tuesday to snap Barcelona's 11-game winning streak with a 1-1 draw in the Champions League.

Substitute Eren Derdiyok earned the Swiss champions their first point in football’s most prestigious club tournament after volleying Carlitos’s cross hard into the ground to bounce up into the top of the goal.

Lionel Messi had opened for the Spanish league leader at the Nou Camp after running across the top of the area to pass to Thierry Henry before directing the Frenchman’s flick back inside the near post in the 62nd minute.

Barcelona top Group C with ten points, one more than Portuguese club Sporting. Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk have three, while Basel stayed last despite restoring some pride following a recent 5-0 home defeat to Barcelona.

Switzerland striker Marco Streller led Basel’s attack from the left but often had little support after coach Christian Gross switched to a defensive 1-4-1-4 after Barcelona tore a 4-4-2 formation apart two weeks ago.

But Basel, coming off their biggest defeat in European play, managed to draw even with only their second shot on goal.

Basel’s next Champions League match is against Shakhtar Donetsk, away, on November 26.
