Blocher group posts strong sales results

The EMS-Chemie group, run by the populist politician Christoph Blocher, reports an improved turnover and operational result for the first half.

Sales went up by 8.4 per cent to SFr576 million, while earnings before tax and interest rose by 10.1 per cent to SFr101 million.

A statement from company headquarters in Ems said the Performance Polymers division was seeing significant growth compared to the previous year.

“This can be attributed to the increasing weight of high-margin products as well as to very positive market developments in Asia and the United States,” the statement said.

It added that the Engineering division was also profiting from the improved situation in Asian markets. However, results of the Fine Chemicals division remain below those of the previous year.

EMS said it expected slightly stronger net sales revenues for 2000. It said that, provided no unexpected market problems emerged, operating income should be higher than in the previous year (SFr199 million).
