Bodies recovered from avalanche
Rescuers have found the bodies of three people who went missing in fatal avalanches in the Bernese Oberland.
A search of the accident site was stopped during Monday’s bad weather but continued on Tuesday, with rescuers finding all three missing people, the Swiss Air Rescue Service said.
They were two Swiss aged 38 and 47 and a German aged 37.
Four people are already known to have died in the accident in the Diemtig Valley on Sunday afternoon, when a first avalanche hit a group of ski mountaineers, and a second buried rescue workers and skiers assisting in the operation to free them.
Nine people were dug out of the snow on Sunday. One was already dead, and three others, including a doctor belonging to the rescue service, died later in hospital. The others were injured or suffering from hypothermia.
It is the most serious avalanche accident in Switzerland since February 1999 when 12 people were killed in the Val D’Hérens in canton Valais.
