Buemi finishes F1 season with an extra point

Sébastien Buemi of Switzerland has finished eighth in the final Formula One Grand Prix race of the season in Abu Dhabi.

The result, in which the Scuderia Toro Rosso driver picked up one point, came one day after Buemi turned 21 years old. The Swiss said the point was “a nice way to end the season”.

Sunday’s race was won by German driver Sebastian Vettel, who races for Red Bull. Teammate Mark Webber finished second and Brawn GP’s Jenson Button came third. Lewis Hamilton, who led up to the first set of pit stops for McLaren, had to retire.

Vettel’s win secured him second place in the drivers’ championship, 11 points behind Button (95 points). Buemi, a newcomer to the world’s top racing circuit, finishes with six points.

BMW-Sauber drivers Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica finished fifth and tenth respectively. It was the 70th and last race for the Swiss-based team, which is retiring from Formula One after Munich-based and major stakeholder BMW pulled out. In September it was announced that Swiss-based foundation, Qadbak Investments, is to buy the team.
