Cancellara joins Schleck brothers in Luxembourg

Swiss cyclist Fabian Cancellara has joined the Schleck brothers’ team on a three-year deal, the Luxembourg Pro Cycling Project said on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old two-time Olympic gold medallist, who achieved a rare Tour of Flanders Paris-Roubaix classic double this year, is joining from Bjarne Riis’s Saxo Bank team.

Tour de France runner-up Andy Schleck and his brother Frank also left Saxo Bank at the end of the season to launch their own team – which has no official name yet – and have attracted several team mates to Luxembourg.

Cancellera said he had received several offers. “In the end I knew that the project in Luxembourg would have all the ingredients I would need to continue improving myself without skipping a beat,” he said in a statement.

Team general manager Brian Nygaard says time-trial world champion Cancellera joins Andy Schleck to form “one of the best teams in the sport”.

Riis has signed three-time Tour de France champion Alberto Contador, who failed a drugs test for the banned anabolic agent clenbuterol in July. The Spaniard has been provisionally suspended until the International Cycling Union (UCI) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) finish an investigation.
