The Swiss Broadcasting Corporation is appealing for donations to aid drought victims in east Africa. The SBC’s Solidarity Chain, which raises money for Swiss development aid groups, said the situation in Ethiopia and other parts of the region was alarming.

The foundation said Swiss aid groups were organising food and other supplies to help about half a million people. It warned the situation could worsen dramatically over the next few weeks if the region received no rain.

The Solidarity Chain has opened an account for donations.

The Swiss branch of the charity, Caritas, has announced that it is increasing its aid from SFr300,000 to 500,000. Caritas said it was delivering food as well as water tanks and pumps to the worst-hit areas in south-eastern Ethiopia.

The money will also allow Caritas to extend long-term projects to distribute seeds and farming implements to around 5,000 farmers.
