The Swiss voice in the world since 1935

In the blacksmith’s lair

The theme of this year's European Heritage Days in Switzerland is "Fire, light, energy". A visit to the blacksmith at the private National Equine Centre gives a glimpse into an activity that has remained unchanged for a long time.

The centre was established in 1997, when the army decided it no longer wanted to operate the site. Around 200 horses are now stabled there. The blacksmith shoes the centre’s own horses, plus animals belonging to the army and to private individuals using both industrially-made and handmade horseshoes. A smartphone displays the SWIplus app with news for Swiss citizens abroad. Next to it, a red banner with the text: ‘Stay connected with Switzerland’ and a call to download the app.
