Federer bids for a seventh Wimbledon title

Switzerland’s Roger Federer is preparing to bid for a seventh title at Wimbledon, which opens on Monday.

The world tennis number two was unexpectedly knocked out in the French Open quarterfinals last month by Robin Söderling of Sweden.

The defeat ended Federer’s streak of reaching the semifinals in 23 consecutive major events. It also cost him his number one spot, which was transferred to Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

For the third time in one month, Roger Federer will play against Colombian Alejandro Falla, whom he has beaten on more than one occasion, in his opening match at Wimbledon.

It’s the first time since 2001 that Federer has come to Wimbledon with only one tournament victory behind him for the year.

Fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka’s opening match is against Uzbek Denis Istomin.
