Federer wins opening match at Wimbledon

Top-ranked Roger Federer has won his first round match at the Wimbledon tennis tournament in straight sets.

He breezed past Slovakia’s Dominik Hrbaty 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 on Monday and will face Robin Söderling of Sweden in the second round.

Federer, who aims for his sixth consecutive Wimbledon title, extended his unbeaten streak on grass to 60 matches.

Patty Schnyder lost her opening match against Australia’s Casey Dellacqua by 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Schnyder managed to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2007.

Fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka won his match against Marcos Daniel of Brazil by 6-3, 6-2, 7-5.

Despite making 14 unforced errors compared to Daniel’s two, Wawrinka had an 89 per cent success rate of winning points on his first serve and won the match after 93 minutes. It is his fourth time at Wimbledon.
