Schweinsteiger and Klose put the German team ahead before Gomes pulled a goal back in the first half of the match in Basel.

Ballack extended his team's lead with a header in the 61st minute, while substitute Postinga nodded Portugal's second goal in the last minutes of the game.

The Germans had come second in the group stage of the championship but observers say they lived up to their reputation as a team which is able to move up a gear during a tournament.

They will face the winner of the Croatia against Turkey match in Basel next Wednesday.
