Grasshoppers win Zurich derby

FC Zurich's Keita (centre) chips the ball into the Grasshoppers net to put his team 1-0 ahead Keystone

Grasshoppers Zurich have beaten local rivals FC Zurich 2-1 to cement their lead at the top of the football league table.

FC Zurich were attempting on Wednesday night to win their first match on home turf against the Grasshoppers since 1984 – and their bid to draw a line over the intervening 18 years began well.

To the delight of the home crowd, Keita struck the ball into the back of the net on the 35th minute of the match, but the cheers from local supporters were destined to be short-lived.

Eduardo equalised in the 74th, while teammate Baturina made sure it was the visitors who went home with smiles on their faces when he chipped the ball past Zurich’s goalkeeper just before the final whistle.

In Wednesday night’s other matches, Lucerne trounced Delémont 3-0 at home to move to second place in the table, while Servette notched up a 2-0 victory over St Gallen.

Saturday’s matches see Bern’s Young Boys travel to Thun, while Wil are due to play Aarau.

Basel – who started the season with a 1-0 victory over Aarau last weekend – will square off against Neuchâtel Xamax.
