Hingis, who defeated Zanetti 6-2, 6-3, will now face America's former world number one Monica Seles, who on Tuesday managed to upset her compatriot and number two seed Venus Williams in a three set (6-7, 6-2, 6-3) thriller.

The Swiss number one player met Zanetti for the second time in Melbourne.

"I played against her when I was nine years old in France," said Hingis, "and I won."
