The world number one seed cruised through the first set 6-0, winning it in just 13 minutes.

But Hingis had more trouble in the second, taking it 7-5. The match lasted just over an hour. Hingis has now won 11 of her 13 encounters against Seles.

Williams powered past the French player, Natalie Tauziat 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, and will meet Hingis on Friday.

Hingis has won nine but lost six of her encounters against the American, who is ranked number three in the world.

Hingis has not won a major international tournament for 18 months, and is hoping to end her season with a victory in New York.
