Jobs to go at Swissair Group's Gate Gourmet

Job cuts strike at Gate Gourmet in Zurich Keystone

Swissair Group's airline catering division, Gate Gourmet, says it is to cut 420 jobs in Zurich. The announcement comes after Swissair filed for bankruptcy protection last week, and warned that thousands of jobs were likely to go across its worldwide operations.

The cuts at Gate Gourmet involve 250 permanent positions and 170 temporary posts. Gate Gourmet said in a statement that it would notify the employees affected this week, and the jobs would go by the end of March 2002.

"This radical action is essential to secure the future of our company and safeguard as many jobs as possible," said Beat Gehrig, managing director of Gate Gourmet Zurich. "We'll also be helping the employees affected to find new positions."

Gate Gourmet Zurich currently has a workforce of 1,245 full time staff.

The reductions in Zurich are part of an already announced ten per cent reduction in the 30,000 strong worldwide workforce of the Gate Gourmet Group.
