Hingis stumbles to Mauresmo in Berlin
Switzerland's world number one tennis player, Martina Hingis, has been defeated by France's Amélie Mauresmo in the semi-finals of the German Open in Berlin on Saturday.
Hingis lost in three sets, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.
Although the Swiss star took the first set, Mauresmo fought back and dominated play during the rest of the match. Hingis tried to find her form in the final set, coming back from 1-5 to 4-5, but scoring only once on her serve, the outcome of the match was decided.
The Frenchwoman secured her victory in 93 minutes, while Hingis lost any chance this year of regaining the title she won in 1999.
Mauresmo now goes on to face the American Jennifer Capriati in Sunday’s finals. Capriati made it to the finals after her opponent, the Belgian Justine Henin, suffered an ankle injury.
Hingis’s defeat came after a difficult match against Spain’s Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario on Friday. Hingis lost the opening set 3-6, but eventually came back to win the match 6-3, 7-6.
