Krueger names ice hockey squad

Teenager Roman Josi is one of several rookies on Switzerland's national hockey team Keystone

Swiss ice hockey coach Ralph Krueger has named the 25 players who will represent their country at the world championship in Bern and Zurich, beginning April 24.

Following two preliminary games against Norway – which the Swiss won 5-1 and 3-2 – Krueger dropped six players to create his final selection.

There are no great surprises. Eighteen-year-old Roman Josi is the youngest member of the squad and, along with Félicien Du Bois and Ryan Gardner, is one of three world championship rookies.

Switzerland’s three goalies are Martin Gerber of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League (NHL), Daniel Manzato of the American Hockey League’s Albany River Rats and Ronnie Rüeger of the Kloten Flyers.

The eight defensemen are Goran Bezina, Severin Blindenbacher, Raphael Diaz, Félicien Du Bois, Philippe Furrer, Roman Josi, Mathias Seger and Mark Streit. All except Streit, a star for the NHL’s New York Islanders, play on Swiss teams.

The 14 forwards are Andres Ambühl, Thomas Déruns, Ryan Gardner, Sandy Jeannin, Romano Lemm, Thibaut Monnet, Thierry Paterlini, Martin Plüss, Kevin Romy, Ivo Rüthemann, Raffaele Sannitz, Julien Sprunger, Roman Wick and Thomas Ziegler. They all play on Swiss teams.
