Public transport – how taxpayers’ money is invested
Switzerland has the most intensively used rail network in the world. Every day, an average of 121 passenger trains travel on each kilometre of the rail network. In 2010, more than 1.8 billion journeys were made by public transport.
The national government, the cantons and the communes invest about SFr5 billion ($5.4 billion) into the operation and the maintenance of public transport every year. The network continues to expand. In 1962, the railways, regional buses, trolleybuses, tramways, cableways and funiculars covered a distance of 16,235 kilometres. By 2012, the entire network extended over 25,571 kilometres.
