Rosset announces retirement
The Swiss tennis star, Marc Rosset, has announced his immediate retirement from the game following his first-round defeat at Wimbledon.
Rosset, who tumbled out of the tournament after losing to Sweden’s Magnus Larsson 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 2-6, made the announcement shortly after coming off court.
In a brief statement to the press, Rosset said his 13th appearance at Wimbledon would be “the last tournament” he ever plays in.
“To be perfectly honest, unless someone turns up tomorrow to try and change my mind, I think it’s safe to say I’ve just played for the last time.”
But 30-year-old Rosset, who is third in the national rankings behind Roger Federer and Michel Kratochvil, confirmed he would honour his commitment to play in the doubles tournament at Wimbledon.
Rosset was due to play at Switzerland’s upcoming Open Tournament in Gstaad, which starts the day after the men’s final at Wimbledon. If Rosset confirms his decision to retire from the professional game, the news will be a bitter disappointment to Gstaad organisers.
