Russian club wins Davos ice-hockey event

SKA St Petersburg have clinched this year’s traditional ice hockey exhibition tournament in the Swiss resort of Davos.

The Russian side defeated Team Canada 4-3 in regular time on Friday, succeeding Dynamo Minsk which won the competition – known as the Spengler Cup – last year.

Both Swiss club sides – local HC Davos and Servette Geneva HC – had crashed out of the tournament in the semifinals on Thursday.

The Spengler Cup was first held in 1923 making it the world’s oldest professional ice-hockey club tournament.

As a rule it pits a Canadian national team made up of players with European clubs, against a series of European sides, including the local heroes Davos, during the Christmas break.
