The transport ministry said it had budgeted SFr1.2 billion for maintenance and expansion of existing stretches, and that it had set aside SFr965 million for new initiatives.

The announcement follows funding approval by parliament last December. In total, there are 1,763 kilometres of motorway in Switzerland.

The largest beneficiaries will be the region around the capital, Bern, as well as Zurich and the southwestern Valais region.

New projects for 2008 include tunnels in southeastern and central Switzerland, as well as stretches in Zurich and Basel.
