Mixed results for Swiss athletes

Ice skating hope Sarah Meier has finished sixth at the women's World Figure Skating Championships in Gothenburg in Sweden, but with her best ever score.

While in tennis, Stanislas Wawrinka, Switzerland’s number two, has gone out of the Indian Wells tournament in the quarterfinals.

Meier on Thursday evening equalled her best result of sixth place in the Calgary World Championships. The seven-times Swiss champion’s overall score was 171.88 – a personal best.

“I am starting to really enjoy myself on the ice,” the 24-year-old said afterwards.

Japanese skating prodigy Mao Asada, just 17 years old, won the event after recovering from a spectacular fall.

But it was disappointment for Wawrinka at Indian Wells. He went out to third-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia in the quarterfinals.

It was the first time that Wawrinka had progressed so far in a Masters tournament.
