The blue neon sign, Eau et gaz à tous les étages, flashes at the walls of hay stables near Bondo. The artist refers to French artist Marcel Duchamp and the era when electric light was installed in the valley.
Piero del Bondio (Switzerland, born 1947): Ahi!
Hidden in an idyllic forest clearing near Vicosporano, two cylindrical stone towers rise. They served as gallows in the 18th century. The artist evokes feelings of pain and fear.
Rémy Markowitsch (Switzerland, born 1947): Chestnut
The chestnut is the main protagonist in the work of Markowitsch on display near Soglio. The artist follows the traces of emigrated inhabitants of the Bregaglia valley to Africa.
Ursula Palla (Switzerland, born 1961): Passage
Near the tower Belvedere in Maloja, laughter is being heard, spreading over the whole valley. The installation opens up the art course and recurs in other sites down to Chiavenna.

Zaugg's sugar sculpture is a reminder of the confectioners of the Bregaglia valley who often were forced to emigrate. It is on display at a former petrol station on the main road near Stampa.

A model church near Casaccia is composed of the words Beauty and Sobriety, written in Gothic letters. The installation aims to increase the polar identity of the valley.
Pfelder (Germany, born 1965): Room with a View
Three bivouac-like structures furnish the ruins of an ancient hotel, which was built by the Belgian count, Camille de Renesse, at Torre Belvedere near Maloja.

The woman's arm holding a gas lamp is borrowed from Marcel Duchamp's Etant donnés. The work of art is to be found near a waterfall below Soglio.
Olaf Nicolai (Germany, born 1962): Feltrinelli
A tree at Promontogno bedecked with red isolators recalls the Italian editor, Giangiacomo Feltrinelli. It commemorates his death in a bomb blast aimed at an electricity pylon in the 1970s.
Pfelder (Germany, born 1965): Lost
The Lost sign is located right above the faded lettering Paradiso in the botanical garden above Chiavenna. The German artist evokes the idea of a paradise lost.

The Bregaglia valley is usually perceived as a transit region between the urban centre of Milan and mountain resort of St Moritz. A number of artists who visited and explored the valley have put their works on display in an open-air exhibition which runs until September 21. (pictures: ArteBregaglia)
