Ceremonies and entertainment in a public and private context were determining factors in the city's music life at such a coming-together of Europe's sacred and secular powers. At a mass in the Basle Cathedral, one could have heard the Council's own vocal ensemble. In the secular context, songs and instrumental music would surely have been heard in their appropiate settings. The juxtaposition of both spheres is also mirrored in the musical sources that have a 'Basle' aspect about them. It defines the concept and the soundscape of the present recording.
