swissinfo.ch

Post-Bop. Former dean of the Swiss Jazz School Joe Haider is one of the most colourful characters in Swiss jazz. This German-born pianist learned his metier from scratch in his home country at the side of touring American stars after World War II. Following a period of turbulent activity in the jazz hotbed Munich, he moved to Switzerland to begin his legendary tenure at the SJS, which lasted from 1984-95. Obviously Joe Haider has left an significant mark on many graduates and thus the Swiss jazz scene of the day. On occasion of his 75th birthday this year, he composed Lebenslinien, an eight-piece retrospective, musical journey. This sonic party features long-time buddies along with young talents in changing band formats, ranging from trio to eleventet. Haider's tuneful, grooving originals are an emphatic ode to straight-ahead jazz.
