Modern Jazz. This piano trio from Basel with the anatomic name verily strikes due to its organic powerplay yet branching sounds. Vein presents with Porgy & Bess a rendition of Gershwin's immortal operatic warhorse. Fortunately it hasn't become simply another mainstream head-solos-head litany. These classically trained musicians, who have delved deeply into modern jazz, put the ensemble first. As in occidental chamber music, their high-flying solo excursuses solely contrast the rich intertwined sonic continuum. Vein illuminate this iconic love story with glinting colours full of rocking twists and sometimes wonderfully restrained cantilenas which feature the terrific arco double-bass work by Thomas Lähns.
