Vienna Art Orchestra: The Minimalism Of Erik Satie

swissinfo.ch

Bigband jazz / Contemporary. Besides George Gruntz Matthias Rüegg is the other Swiss big band leader and composer who has gained wide international reputation for his work. During the 70s Rüegg left his native Zurich to study jazz piano and composition in Graz (AT). Afterwards he moved to Vienna and founded there his iconoclastic Vienna Art Orchestra, an ensemble which united some of the best jazz players from both countries Austria and Switzerland. Over the years this avantgarde orchestra has toured the globe regularly with diverse, surprising programms. By spring 2010 the group disbanded due to financial problems. The Minimalism Of Erik Satie showcases never before released archive material from 1984. The ensemble can be heard in top form, bringing out the pointillist and ambient character of Satie's innovations in crystalline performances. Rüegg's arrangements give these short pieces his very distinct jazz touch.
