The cabinet has appointed Markus Seiler as the new head of the unified foreign and domestic intelligence services.

From the beginning of next year both units will pool data for evaluation, but information gathering will still be carried out separately.

Defence Minister Ueli Maurer said Seiler had the necessary professional experience and political sensitivity for the post.

Seiler has been in charge of unifying both services under one ministry following a decision by parliament last year.

In the past, the domestic unit was part of the justice ministry, while the defence ministry was in charge of the foreign service.
