Ogi set to leave UN at the end of the year
Former Swiss cabinet minister Adolf Ogi has announced he is to leave his position as United Nations special advisor on sport for development and peace.
The 65-year-old Bernese, who took up the job in 2001 at the request of the then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, said in Geneva on Monday that he had tried to promote sport within the UN as a tool for peace.
The world body set up about 1,000 projects involving sport during his mandate. Ogi noted that sport could also help promote education, health and other aspects of development.
Ogi, who will step down at the end of this month, said that he believed he had helped create a framework for future work.
In a recent interview with swissinfo, Ogi said that it was time to move on and let someone else take over the role. The current UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, had asked him to pursue his mandate after Annan’s retirement at the end of last year.
