Gagliardi's weak forehand was the deciding factor in an uneven match in which both players made unforced errors.

Gagliardi, ranked world number 83, failed to take advantage of two chances to lead in the second set. She had the opportunity for breaks at 3-1 and 4-2.

Despite losing, Gagliardi still believes she played better than during her first round match. But she said, "I haven't been able to train very much since I injured my ankle at the US Open."

Tennis experts say the Geneva tennis player could have gone further but for her nervousness during major tournaments. She has never made it past the second round of a grand slam event.
