Producer prices edge higher in July

The Swiss producer and import price index edged up slightly in July compared to a year ago and was slightly lower than June, indicating an almost total absence of supply worries.

The Federal Statistics Office said on Thursday that the combined index was up 0.2 points on July 2000 and slipped 0.1 on June.

The producer price index was up 0.7 points on last year and slipped 0.1 on June while import prices dropped 0.8 points from last year and 0.1 from June.

The statistics office said vegetables, slaughter cattle, meat, eggs, oil and gas were cheaper. But milk, meat products, vegetable fats and oils, butter and beer were more expensive.

Financial markets largely ignored the data.
