Switzerland's Flavia Rigamonti has qualified for the final of the 1,500-metre freestyle event at the world swimming championships in Fukuoka, Japan. Rigamonti also improved her national record during her heat on Friday.

The Ticino swimmer came sixth overall in Friday’s time trials, finishing in 16 minutes 27.91 seconds. She remains over 13 seconds behind the fastest qualifier, Germany’s Hanna Stockbauer.

Rigamonti beat her Swiss record by 58 hundredths of a second. She finished fifth in her favourite event, the 800-metre freestyle race, on Monday.

Switzerland’s other representative in the 1,500 freestyle was less successful in her attempt to qualify. Chantal Strasser finished her heat in 16 minutes 45.6 seconds, 15 seconds away from the last qualifying place and 16th overall.

In the men’s 50-metre butterfly event, Lorenz Liechti failed to progress beyond his preliminary heat. Liechti finished 37th overall in 25.19 seconds.

In the one-metre diving competition, Jean-Romain Delaloye finished 18th overall, scoring 305.37 points in the preliminary round of the competition.
