Rosset fails to make Paris quarterfinals

Marc Rosset was no match for Fabrice Santoro, who performed triumphantly before a home crowd Keystone

Marc Rosset has become the third Swiss tennis player to crash out of the $3 million Paris Masters. Rosset was denied a place in the quarterfinals by Frenchman Fabrice Santoro.

Playing before an enthusiastic home crowd on Thursday, Santoro beat the Genevan 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (3).

Rosset had managed to book his place in the third round after an impressive straight sets win over another French player, the tournament’s 14th seed, Cédric Pioline.

Rosset was Switzerland’s last hope at the French tournament, with his compatriots having headed out of the event earlier in the week.

The Swiss number one, Roger Federer, tumbled out in the first round, losing in three sets to Slovakia’s Dominik Hrbaty.

Switzerland’s third ranked player, George Bastl, held on slightly longer, but narrowly lost on Wednesday in a tough match against the Russian world number one, Marat Safin.
