Williams, a former world number one, won the match in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, to take the 29th singles title of her career.

The American, currently ranked 11th, had beaten her sister Venus on Saturday to reach the final.

She was at times stretched by the left-handed Schnyder, but came back strongly to break the Swiss in the 12th to win the opening set.

"I tried my best but lost it in the second set," Schnyder said afterwards. "Hopefully we will meet again this year and I will be able to beat her."

Schnyder's next tournament will be in Miami beginning on March 24.
