ABB lands Mexican electricity contract
The Swiss-Swedish engineering company, ABB, has won a major contract in Mexico's electricity sector. The deal is worth $80 million (SFr135 million).
ABB, which has its headquarters in canton Aargau, will be responsible for the planning, construction and financing of an electricity transmission system in Mexico.
The 750 km high-voltage system includes advanced fibre optic links and integrated control systems, and will help meet Mexico’s steadily increasing demand for energy.
The power transmission system is intended to improve the link between growing industrial centres in the states of Tamaulipas and San Luis Potosi, north of the capital, Mexico City.
The contract is part of a larger $250 million project run by Mexico’s state-owned Comision Federal de Electricidad, to speed up development of the country’s electrical infrastructure.
Work is expected to begin this month, with completion due in 2002.
