Fribourg senator Urs Schwaller has become the latest politician to express an interest in standing for election to the federal cabinet.

The centre-right parliamentarian announced his intention at a news conference in Bern on Thursday. He is the second member of his party, after Dominique de Buman, to declare an interest in the seat currently held by the other main centre-right party, the Radicals.
Schwaller is the sixth candidate to enter the race ahead of the election to be held in September. On Monday Radical Fulvio Pelli said he was willing to stand, if that was what his party wanted.
Interior Minister Pascal Couchepin announced in mid-June he was quitting the cabinet in October.
