President’s address to the Swiss abroad

Lanterns and fireworks are popular in Switzerland on August 1 Keystone

The 750,000 Swiss abroad give Switzerland “a voice, a face and a presence around the world” at a time when challenges are global, says President Didier Burkhalter in his August 1 speech.

A new law on the Swiss abroad is being drafted and legislation has been adopted to protect Swiss schools, he says. Globally, Burkhalter notes that today’s challenges range from climate change to human rights and peace.

Traditionally, the Swiss President records an address for the Swiss abroad each year in celebration of the Swiss national holiday. Here’s what President Burkhalter has to say.
