The Isopublic survey put Leuthard, a Christian Democrat, just ahead of Justice Minister Simonetta Sommaruga and Foreign Minister Didier Burkhalter. Cabinet newcomer from last year, Interior Minister Alain Berset was fourth, followed by Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf, who holds the finance ministry portfolio.

The Social Democrat Party president, Christian Levrat, was the best liked politician outside the cabinet.

The rightwing Swiss People’s Party was the favourite party, backed by 23.7 per cent of respondents, followed by the centre-left Social Democrats and the centre-right Radicals. But when compared with the parliamentary election results of October 2011, the People’s Party result was 2.9 per cent down while the Social Democrats rose by 1.2 per cent.

Around 1,000 people took part in the survey over the last month. The results were published in Le Matin Dimanche and SonntagsZeitung on Sunday.
